One of the most fun aspects of Fall is apple picking. I always find that I end up with too many apples to eat and enjoy using the extras for applesauce. Not only does homemade applesauce taste better than anything you can buy at the grocery store, it also makes your home smell amazing! 7-8 small/medium-sized Fuji apples
½ tsp cinnamon
½ cup white sugar
3/4 cup water
juice of 1 lemon
1. Peel, core, and dice the apples, and add to large cooking pot.
2. Add white sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, and water, and stir.
3. Bring liquid to a boil. Then reduce heat to low. Cover the pot and simmer until apples become soft (about 15 minutes), stirring occasionally. Test by pulling out an apple piece from the pot and mashing with a fork; if the fork easily mashes the apple, they are ready.
4. Pour cooked apples/juices into food processor and puree; you can also use a potato masher as an alternative.
5. Jar applesauce and store in the refrigerator. Not ready to eat over the next few days? Safely freeze the remainder for up to three months.
Note: If trying to be healthier, reduce sugar to ¼ cup or substitute with Splenda. Homemade applesauce also makes a tasty and healthy dessert!
