Make Coffee Time Cozier With Painted Coffee Mugs

Updated: Feb 18, 2019

Painting a plate or coffee cup makes the perfect birthday or Christmas gift! It’s also a fun and easy way for the kiddos to spend an afternoon and gives them a sense of accomplishment when a finished product is ready. Materials can either be purchased separately or as part of a kit.

I chose to share this particular project because it is just as easy as coloring a picture but creates a permanent, usable item that my kids have really enjoyed making! And it's not just painting the cup, but also learning how to bake pottery, that really makes the whole process fun.

Do not be afraid to expand to other dishware. One of my favorite ceramic pot holders has flowers that I hand painted. It has followed me move after move and will be something I continue to use until it finally breaks!

I would love to see what you come up with. Be sure to share your comments and pictures below!

Difficulty Level: Beginner

Project Time: 45 minutes

Plain white coffee cup

Small paint brush

Multi-purpose acrylic paint

Plastic bag

Paper towels

Aluminum foil

Step by Step:

1. Prepare

Lay down plastic to prevent spilling on the ground…you will thank yourself later!

Set out cup, paint, paint brush, and paper towels.

2. Paint

Let the little ones work their magic as they paint the cup.

Wipe brush on paper towel between color changes to prevent unwanted mixing of colors.

3. Bake

Place aluminum foil on top of cookie sheet. Then place painted cup on the aluminum foil.

To prevent breakage, cup must be placed in oven as soon as it begins to warm and until it cools down.

Set oven to 360°F, and place cookie sheet with cup into oven right away. Bake 30 minutes. Then turn oven off.*

Leave cookie sheet and cup in the oven as it cools.
